ATELIERS QUEL AMOUR!
In the spirit of the Ateliers de l’EuroMéditerranée, which were one of the flagship events of MP2103, European Capital of Culture, MP2018 and Mécènes du Sud are reviving this dynamic residency programme by inviting artists to immerse themselves in the worlds of private companies throughout the territory where they will create original artworks.
A TRIO SYSTEM : ARTISTS – COMPANIES – VENUES
Every artist residency combines an artist and a venue working in conjunction with a company. The residencies run from a few weeks to an entire year, and at the end an original artwork must be produced that will be presented to the public in the framework of MP2018 Quel Amour!
Artist: Virgile Fraisse – SMW_S
Company: Orange Marine
Venue: FRAC PACA
Meet the artist on Saturday 1 September at 5pm at FRAC PACA
A screening of the artwork will be followed by a conversation with Virgile Fraisse, in partnership with Triangle France, Mécènes du Sud, and Décalab, part of the Ateliers Quel Amour! programme.
An understanding of French will greatly enhance your enjoyment of this event.
SMW_S is an experimental project that traces the history of a fictional screenwriter’s enclave deep within the archives of the telecom Orange, formerly known as France Telecom.
The group evolved as a think tank that excavated accounts of Mediterranean events from different eras and found connections between them: from the emergence and rivalry of the first networks to the geo-strategic plotting of investors in Northern Africa.
This project emerged from a series of artistic residencies within branches of Orange, notably at the Orange Marine location in Seyne-sur-Mer with its collaboration with Decalab.
Initiated in 2014, SEA-ME-WE explores the impact of underwater fibre optic cables on the individual and digital liberty of people in countries in Europe, the Middle East, and and South-East Asia. The previous chapters of the project took place in locations such as Mumbai, Karachi, and Palermo and were presented to the public on numerous occasions.
The next film in the project, SEA-ME-WE 3, will be set in Singapore (Grey Project) and will be presented at the next edition of the Ateliers de Rennes.
