Orfeo & Majnun - French premiere
Moneim Adwan, Howard Moody, Dick van der Harst
Orpheus was deeply in love with Eurydice, and then death took her away from him. que la mort lui enlève. Qays loved Layla, and then her father took her away from him. One sang of his despair to the wild beasts before venturing off to find his wife in Hades. The other became “Majnun”, literally the one who was “crazy” with love, and began to sing to animals. This opera is inspired by one of the great myths of Western civilisation and one of the most celebrated legends of Arab culture. This work mixes professional and amateur singers to create a vast operatic fresco and a lively public celebration. The opera will be held outdoors under the night sky and will be preceded by an artistic parade through the city of Aix-en-Provence. The choir, the soloists, the orchestra, and animals of all sorts will come together to sing of desire. And of a love that is strong than any sense of despair.
